Prisoned 9 ½ years for insulting the president
In 2006, Bahareh Hedayat from Iran was elected the first women board member in Tahkim-e Vahdat, an Iranian pro-democratic student organization. One of her most important issues was to establish better student rights for women. Around midnight December 31 2009, Bahareh was arrested by the intelligence service for the fifth time in three years. They charged her for crimes concerning national security, such as propaganda against the political system, participating at illegal meetings and insulting the president. In May 2010, Bahareh was convicted to 9 ½ years prison in the notorious prison Evin. She is currently serving her sentence.
