General safety tips
While South Africa is beautiful and diverse, it is essential to remain vigilant, especially in urban areas like Pretoria. Follow these general safety tips:
- Avoid walking alone, especially at night, preferably with someone who is familiar with the local context.
- Use secure transport services, like ride-hailing apps (Uber is widely used in Pretoria. Bolt is not safe).
- Keep your personal belongings secure and out of sight in public spaces. If you're lost and need to check your phone, step into a shop or restaurant before you take it out.
- Be cautious when withdrawing money from ATMs, and avoid using them at night.
Health & Emergency Services:
Should you need assistance, see emergency contacts numbers above, and local SIM cards will be available for purchase at the airport or hotel. There is WiFi at the hotel and event venues.
