In this statement SAIH condemns the Iranian authorities’ brutal crackdown on peaceful protests and stands in solidarity with Iranian students who are risking their freedom and lives in the struggle for democracy, dignity, and human rights.

Violent crackdown on peaceful protests

In recent weeks, the Iranian authorities have launched a brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters, including students who have taken to the streets in Tehran and other cities. They are demanding democracy, systemic change, respect for human rights, dignity, and freedom, as severe economic pressures and widespread government corruption have pushed people to the brink.

Students and young people leading this resistance continue to face widespread arbitrary arrests, abductions, and killings simply for exercising their right to peaceful protest and voice their opinions. Reports indicate that thousands of protesters have been killed nationwide, with the numbers increasing drastically every day. The recent killing of student Rubina Aminian highlights the brutality faced by students in Iran.

Authorities have also shut down the internet in an attempt to hide the violence and silence dissent. Desipte this, reports continue to emerge documenting the violent repression of students across the country.

Students refuse to be silenced

Despite the risks, Iranian students and young people continue to mobilize and resist. These protests represent one of the largest protets that Iran has seen since the Women, Life, Freedom movement in 2022, following the death of Mahsa Amini while detained by the morality police.

SAIH calls for international action

SAIH calls for an immediate end to the brutal violence against protesters and for the release of all those arbitrarily detained in Iran. We urge the international community, including Norway, to pay attention, speak out, and pursue measures to hold Iranian authorities accountable for their ongoing and systematic violations of human rights.

To the students in Iran: SAIH stands in full solidarity with you. We stand with you in your fight for fundamental human rights, freedom and change.
