Gender studies: Democracy's canary?

Time and place: Dec 7, 2022 13:00-15:00 at Domus Bibliotheca, Oslo

Well into the 20th century, coal miners brought canaries into coal mines as an early-warning signal for toxic gases. If the bird stopped singing, the workers knew they had to get out.

Gender studies is like the canary in the coal mine, says the Hungarian historian and gender scientist Andrea Pető. Attacks on gender studies is also an attack on democracy and academic freedom. Pető herself comes from a country where gender studies has been shut down for political reasons.

Unfortunately, Hungary is not a unique case. Gender studies are under attack in several countries.

- How is this all connected? Why are gender studies targeted around the world? And what does the prospects for academic freedom look like in Nordic countries right now?

Now Pető has won UiO's human rights prize 2022.

Welcome to a panel talk on academic freedom, at Domus Bibliotheca in Oslo. After the seminar, you are much welcome to enjoy some light refreshments.

Program:

Keynote speaker: Andrea Pető, historian and gender researcher, Central European University (CEU). Winner of the University of Oslo's human rights prize 2022

Comment: Kaj- Martin Georgsen, National director, CARE Norway

Panel:

Andrea Pető, Professor, Central European University (CEU) Åse Gornitzka, Pro-Rector, University of Oslo Karen-Lise Scheie Knudsen, Head of Scholars At Risk-Norway Linda Rustad, Director and responsible editor, Kilden kjønsforskning

Moderator: Hector Ulloa, President, SAIH

The seminar is organized as part of Oslo Peace Days 2022, in collaboration with Kilden, Scholars At Risk-Norge, and the University of Oslo.
